Since its humble beginnings, Mediawatch UK (or National Viewers’ and Listeners Association’ as it was first known) has always sought to bring the public’s views to the attention of the broadcaster and encourage the individual to have their say.

Mediawatch UK’s strapline says we exist ‘for a safer media’. But what do we mean by that?

Mary Whitehouse CBE, founder and president of Mediawatch UK’s predecessor, the National Viewers’ & Listeners’ Association, once famously stated:

‘If you constantly portray violence as normal on TV you will help to create a violent society.’

It’s 11.20pm on a half-term evening and I’m downstairs nagging my 14 year old son about being glued to his phone. Again.

In my mind 11.20pm is ‘unsociable’; in his circle of teenage friends the Snapchat party is just getting started.
